Standards:
Mathematics
M4.A.2.1.1: Solve problems involving all operations with whole numbers, and/or explain the solution (limit to two-step problems; e.g., multiply then add – single digit multipliers and divisors).
M4.E.1.1.1: Describe, interpret and/or answer questions based on data shown in tables, charts, bar graphs or pictographs.
M4.E.1.2.2: Translate information from one type of display to another (table, chart, bar graph, or pictograph).
Reading
R4.A.2.5.1: Summarize the major points, processes and/or events of a nonfictional text as a whole.
R4.B.3.3.3: Interpret graphics and charts and/or make connections between text and the content of graphics and charts.
Writing
1.5.4.A: Write with a clear focus, identifying topic, task, and audience.
1.5.4.B: Develop content
· Students will be able to plan a cruise vacation for a family of 4 on a specific budget.
· Students will be able to create a persuasive presentation.
SECTION TWO: Method(s) of assessment and point of use throughout lesson
Assessment prior to instruction:
Students will already know how to use Powerpoint and Prezi.
Teachers will ask the students if any of them have ever been on a cruise. The teacher will create a list of things they think is included in a cruise on the board using the answers the students provide.
Assessment during instruction: The teachers will go around to each group making sure they are on task and answer any questions they have.
Assessment after instruction: Each group will create a presentation to persuade the family to choose their vacation package. They will then present their presentations to the class.
SECTION THREE: Learning activities/instructional strategies and details as to how the lesson will be carried out
Time Frame: 4, 45 minute sessions
Lesson Details:
· The students will join the teachers on the carpet.
· Introduction: “We know that summer is right around the corner and many of you are probably going on vacation. In order to get you thinking about summer and to get you excited for it, we are going to ask you guys to help a family of 4 plan their summer vacation. They want to go on a cruise but they have a budget to stick to.”
· Teachers will ask the students if any of them have ever been on a cruise.
· The teacher will create a list of things they think is included in a cruise on the board using the answers the students provide.
· Teachers will introduce students to the site they created to help them with this project.
· Teachers will select students to be partners to work on the project.
· Teachers will take the students through the site explaining each mission and what their job is.
· Each group will be required to complete each mission.
· Students will be sent to work with their partners in a designated area of the room.
· Each group will work through each of the missions and fill out the table along the way.
· The teachers will go around to each group making sure they are on task and answer any questions they have.
· Once the students have completed each of the missions, each group will create a presentation to persuade the family to choose their vacation package.
· They will then present their presentations to the class.
· When presenting, the group members will stand in the front of the class while the rest of the students are at their desks.
· Each groups work will be graded based on the rubric provided.
Transitions:
· Students will join the teachers on the carpet as they introduce the project.
· Students will meet up with their partners in a designed area of the room.
